My questions are specifically about the ** bottles, just to check that the 0.018 is a true minimum. The negative value (which I set to zero for contouring, but which doesn't really show up in the plot) sticks out since it's embedded between two really non-zero values, but it also maps into a minimum on the adjacent stations, so perhaps is also a true minimum. - Lynne

looking at the data, there is no obvious analytical problem. if we would flag the data point we would have to do it on the grounds of consistency of the contouring. we are dealing with very low tritium concentrations and some noise above the analytical error is not completely surprising. in such cases, i am usually somewhat hesitant to flag data points if i can't find an analytical problem. - Peter

1. Replaced QUALT2 (mostly "1"s) with QUALT1 in 20001017WHPOSIOSRA.
2. Merged Helium, DelHe3 and Tritium from: comma-separated_value file attached to Bob Newton(LDEO) message 14:59:05 PST, Mar 14, 2002 into current web bottle file (20001017WHPOSIOSRA).
3. QUALT2 same as QUALT1 for all merged values.
4. Changed all quality flag "1"s to "9"s.
5. Replaced missing(blank) quality flag 1 for Sta 232, Ca 1, Sample 36, 3545.5db with "3". This flag is missing in earliest WHPOSIO file found (19980213LDTWHPOSIO). DELC14 value is higher than values just above.
6. LDEO values overwrote Lupton(PMEL) values where both exist for the same bottle.

Hello whomever notes and fixes sum files - There is an irregularity in the p17e/p19s sum file -
There is a float listed at 56 59'S with a station ID of 213 (and cast number of 2).
This SHOULD be station ID of 212 (and keep the cast "2").
How do I know this?
(1) check the position of the float drop - it's the same as station 212.
(2) check the actual float data (which I have from Russ Davis) - also at the same location as station 212.
(This is actually float 208, but the actual float numbers have no correspondence with the hydrographic station numbers.)

we have gone through all juno tritium data and flagged them according to woce procedures. we also plotted sections to check if there are flyers in the data set. the final step we have to complete before submission is to determine the cosmogenic tritium that we subtract from the present numbers. this is only relevant for very low tritium concentrations such as those found in the southern ocean deep and bottom waters (ca. 0.005 to 0.01 TU). i hope that we can finish this by tomorrow and then submit the final tritium and helium isotope numbers to the whpo.

ODF has discovered a small error in the algorithm used to convert ITS90 temperature calibration data to IPTS68. This error affects reported Mark III CTD temperature data for most cruises that occurred in 1992-1999. A complete list of affected data sets appears below.
ODF temperature calibrations are reported on the ITS90 temperature scale. ODF internally maintains these calibrations for CTD data processing on the IPTS68 scale. The error involved converting ITS90 calibrations to IPTS68. The amount of error is close to linear with temperature: approximately -0.00024 degC/degC, with a -0.00036 degC offset at 0 degC. Previously reported data were low by 0.00756 degC at 30 degC, decreasing to 0.00036 degC low at 0 degC. Data reported as ITS90 were also affected by a similar amount. CTD conductivity calibrations have been recalculated to account for the temperature change. Reported CTD salinity and oxygen data were not significantly affected.
Revised final data sets have been prepared and will be available soon from ODF (ftp://odf.ucsd.edu/pub/HydroData). The data will eventually be updated on the whpo.ucsd.edu website as well.
IPTS68 temperatures are reported for PCM11 and Antarktis X/5, as originally submitted to their chief scientists. ITS90 temperatures are reported for all other cruises.

Changes in the final data vs. previous release (other than temperature and negligible differences in salinity/oxygen):
S04P: 694/03 CTD data were not reported, but CTD values were reported with the bottle data. No conductivity correction was applied to these values in the original .sea file. This release uses the same conductivity correction as the two nearest casts to correct salinity.
AO94: Eight CTD casts were fit for ctdoxy (previously uncalibrated) and resubmitted to the P.I. since the original release. The WHP-format bottle file was not regenerated. The CTDOXY for the following stations should be significantly different than the original .sea file values:
009/01 013/02 017/01 018/01 026/04 033/01 036/01 036/02
I09N: The 243/01 original CTD data file was not rewritten after updating the ctdoxy fit. This release uses the correct ctdoxy data for the .ctd file. The original .sea file was written after the update occurred, so the ctdoxy values reported with bottle data should be minimally different.

Notes on merging delhe, delher, helium, helier, neon, neoner from Schlosser: Reformatted original data files (P17EHeNe.SEA & P19SHeNe.SEA) for merging (P*edt.SEA). There were some existing delhe and helium data in the hyd file from Lupton-Evans. The following sta/cast/btl data values were replicated within the data sets, and the Lupton-Evans data was overwritten with the Schlosser data: 206/2/20,23,25,29,33,35;217/1/17;225/1/16;233/1/19.
P17EHeNe.SEA data file had two entries for 195/1/25. Reviewed ODF's Sample Log sheet for this expedition; verified 2 samples were drawn from this Niskin bottle (not a data entry mistake
from PI). Used data for all parameters from first entry.

Sometimes the problem is only bogus values of dissolved oxygen (-0.9) or salt, and sometimes the bogus values might extend more broadly across a bottle data file. Unusual flag values accompany the bogus data. My guess is that this is associated with some sort of column offset during data merging by the WHPO, but Kristin is double-checking the ODF original files just in case.

I transferred files over to the ftp-incoming directory the easy way (for me)... You will find the following "new" directories in /usr/export/ftp-incoming on whpo:

I already gave you p19c (which I see is in P19Cdoc). I thought it was redundant to put long names in every filename, so I made the directory name with the cruise lines, and the files are all the same. The figs files are all figxx.ps (where xx should indicate the figure numbers referenced in the documentation). I also included ps and ascii versions of the original documentation and applicable appendices. (appendix a and b will be missing - they are outdated now and shouldn't be included in anything.)

I have merged total carbon, pco2, and pco2tmp into the p17e_p19s bottle file. The data are from Alex Kozyr and are public. I have replaced the file in the data directory and updated the
public table to reflect the file change.
Merging Notes for p17e_p19s
Carbon/Alkalinity
-from Alex Kozyr (no documentation with file). File contained Tcarb, pco2, pco2tmp
-Missing data values for all parameters were changed from -999.90 to -9.0 WOCE format
-All data were in WOCE format and units.
-Data are public as per Alex Kozyr.
-Data were merged on 05.11.99 by DMB and wocecvt run on it. No errors were generated beyond those that occured on p17ehy.txt (original WHPO file).
-New files: p17ehy_carb.txt, p17ep19s.err (contains output from wocecvt), p17ep19s.sd2 (contains sd2 format used by Lynne Talley).

Maggie Cook at WHOI alerted me to very small errors in the headers in the sum files for p17n and p17e - the LATITUDE and LONGITUDE labels are 1 column too far to the left. I have fixed them and put them in the incoming for the WHPO. I also changed the date stamp on them, but if you think these changes are too minor, change those back. Lynne
