2002/06/07 Jenkins, W. TRITUM Update Needed Yes See Note:

Detailed Notes
Hi Lynne. I don't know why I didn't pick up on that one either. It is obviously bad, but I cannot find any unusual diagnostics in our processing. It is possible that the sample was "blocked" during transfer and the operator didn't notice it. That would be rare, but with thousands of samples processed, I suppose it is possible. Unfortunately, the correlative information we were automatically gathering at that time (unlike now) was insufficient to test for such an event. Since it is so obviously WRONG, I would think we should just -9 it.

Detailed Notes
Alex Orsi pointed out that there is a very low tritium value on P18 at station 34, 98.9 dbar - value is 0.029. There is no flag on it. Somehow it didn't produce a bullseye on my plot (I'm looking into why not.)

Can you please check it for us? Thanks - Lynne

Alex, Greg and Frank:
I'm doing the P18 section now for the Pacific atlas. There are two alkalinity bullseyes. Do you have these in your data set? Should we leave them or flag them as suspicious and remove from the section?

P18:
station 74, bottle 119, value 2221.0 (looks low)
station 88, bottle 119, value 2227.0 (looks low) (last bottle on this station but doesn't match adjoining stations)

I see that both of these already had a flag of 3 for TCARBN.

Station 88 119 also had a flag of 4 for PCO2. So I'm guessing something was wrong with the samples and that these alkalinity values should also be flagged. L. Talley

You are right, these two alkalinity points are clearly outliers. I have flag "2" for both in my database, but obviously these should be flagged as bad-"4".

I believe the stripiness you observe (on P18 ) is station-to-station variability in the standards.

I would agree that the high silicic acids at 110, 112, and 113 are high. I did not see any dramatic shift in the standard factors or intercepts used to calculate those stations. They should be flagged as "3"

I also agree that the deep nitrites you observed should be flagged as "3".

I have placed a file containing CFC113 and CCl4 values for P18 into the P18/original directory under the directory
2001.10.19_P18_CFC113_CCL4_WISEGARVER

This file contains a README file and the data file.

PLEASE NOTE the values for both cfc113 and ccl4 are all missing values and both Q1 and Q2 flags are either 9s or 5s as per Wisegarver's comments. It appears that D. Muus has already corrected the values and flags for cfc113 and ccl4 in the current bottle file when CFC data was merged, if this is the case, no action is needed at this time.

Detailed Notes
Merged July 2001 CFCs into bottle file and placed new woce format and exchange format files on web. Made minor modifications to Summary file. Corrected CFC113 and CCL4 QUALT2 codes per information from Dave Wisegarver, PMEL. Changed Quality Codes 0 and 1 to 9 where appropriate. Changed missing values for DELHE3 and DELC14 from -9. to -999.

Notes on P18 CFC merging Oct 23, 2001.
1. New CFC-11 and CFC-12 from:
/usr/export/html-public/data/onetime/pacific/p18/original/2001.07.09_CFC_UPDT_WISECARVER_P18/20010709.180730_WISEGARVER_P18/20010709.180730_WISEGARVER_P18_p18_CFC_DQE.dat

merged into SEA file from web Oct 1, 2001. (20000619WHPOSIODMB)

Changed all quality code "1"s in first 9 characters of QUALT1 and QUALT2 to "9". CTD and bottle have been DQE'd so quality codes of data values often different.
Changed all quality code "1"s in last 6 characters of QUALT1 to "9".
Then copied QUALT1 to QUALT2. Original QUALT2 had many "1"s where data present and QUALT1 had "2".
Changed TRITUM, HELIUM & DELHE3 quality code "0"s and "1"s to "9" for QUALT1, then copied QUALT1 codes to QUALT2 for these 3 parameters.
Changed DELHE3 missing value from -9.00 to -999.00.
Changed DELC14 missing value from -9.0 to -999.9.
Many CFC113 and CCL4 had QUALT1 = 9 and QUALT2 = 5; changed QUALT2 codes to 9 per info from Dave Wisegarver Oct 19, 2001. Left all CFC113 and CCL4 with QUALT1 and QUALT2 = 5 as is, per note in DOC file.

2. .SUM file lines with missing positions deleted.
Sta 1 Ca 1 BO & EN (no water samples)
Sta 1 Ca 2 BO & EN (no water samples)
Sta 2 Ca 1 EN
Added x to WOCE SECT for Stations 1 through 9. Were blank.
Changed WOCE SECT column to be left-justified.

3. Exchange file checked using Java Ocean Atlas.

2001/02/26 Jenkins, W. He/Tr Data are Public Yes may require minor revisions

Detailed Notes
It was brought to my attention that the WOCE Pacĩc/Indian He-Tr data was not as yet made public. After submitting it to you last year, I had intended on going through it one more time to ensure there were no problems with it. Unfortunately, I have not had the time to do this. Is it possible, therefore, to release it as public data, and if there are any subsequent minor revisions, to make changes? I suspect there might be a few samples in the set that might have got through our initial quality control.

Detailed Notes
I have updated the sumfile, bottle file and added additional documentation file for P18S and P18N. The columns for CCL4, HELER and DELHER are filled with missing data values. Detailed Notes
I just sent revised files (p18.sea, p18.sum, P18.doc) for the P18 expedition to the WHPO anonymous ftp site. Please let me know that they have been received.

I just checked what is at the WHPO site for P18. I cannot find any entries under the category: Detailed information: Data Updates so I cannot tell the history of what is posted there now.

The p18.sea file I just sent contains helium, tritium, delhe3, tcarbn, alkali, pH, and pCO2 data. The CFCs are now on the SIO93 calibration scale. The data have been edited in response to the DQE comments (detailed responses are included in the .doc file). I included the original QUALT2 flags in the .sea file, along with revised flags in the QUALT1 word.

I should be listed as Chief Scientist for P18S, in the format Bullister(Taft) instead of Johnson(Taft). Greg Johnson was not on the P18S leg- he was Chief Scientist on P18N only. Bruce Taft retired several years ago, and has not been involved in the bottle data workup

I have resubmitted our P18 CTD data set to your ftp site. File p18.ctd.Z has been tarred and compressed and contains P18 CTD profiles in WOCE format. I also gave you the .SUM file again.

Lynne has discovered station/filename errors in the data you have. I don't know how this happened but our files here are clean and correct. So we thought it easiest to resubmit the data set again.
